When it comes to learning how to surf, the Hawaiians know best. After all, they are the ones who invented this fantastic sport. And they will tell you that the best way to start is with a 10-foot board, no matter how small or light you are. Why? Because these boards are super easy to stand up and paddle on. They have a lot of volume and stability, making them forgiving and fun.

Sure, they are heavy and hard to carry, but it's worth it. You will catch more waves and have more fun than if you try to learn on a shorter board. Shortboards are excellent but also very difficult and frustrating for beginners. They require more skill and strength, and they sink easily.

So take your time before you switch to a shorter board. First, learn the basics on a long foam board, then gradually work your way down. You will be glad you did. In Blog ###, I'll cover more about the various kinds of surfboards and if they are any good for learning.
